I was a young Judo player when I first met Gary. I was constantly getting beaten up on the mat, so when he asked me to join him, I wasn't sure if it was out of sympathy, whether he fancied an enormous challenge or if he actually saw something in me that he could nurture and build upon.

My relationship with Gary is and I say 'is' because it will always be a constant in my life, far more than a mentor, student one. Gary quickly became a pivotal figurehead in my life with both his teachings and wisdom on and off the mat. Gary was and is my Northern Star, always guiding, always shining, always there and always true.

As you go through life there are many things that make you proud, the birth of your children, passing an exam etc., but for me it will always be when Gary called me and referred to me as 'His Boy'. I can think of no greater honour.

Denise,, Gray & Jonny, I am so proud to be a part of your lives and to have you as a part of mine. I hold you all so dear and as long as I am breathing God's sweet air, I will be indebted to you and always at your service.
